"Going thirty-eight Dan, chill the fuck out, mow your damn lawn and sit the hell down"

---

Back after giving myself a month away from Fedi.

I'll attempt to curate my experience much more, starting with this account and instance.
I want comfy things in my life - I don't need to be adding stress and angst from my online interactions. We can do better. We should do better. Including myself.

My interests cover #tech, #photography, #biking, #motorsport, #fountainpen, and other things I will no doubt need to add here when I remember.
I touch computers in my spare time and self host things. Oh yeah so #selfhosting I guess.
In my other spare time I renovate my house and do #DIY stuff.

Oh and I (used to?) play music. #Guitar I still have and sometimes play, #Saxophone I used to have a couple of decades ago, I had 6 months of Drum lessons, and played Bass for our school band in Rockquest in the late 90's.
I have never done anything that cool since.

Oh I live in New Zealand, Aotearoa.

@arch LMAO

I would totally do this.

"Read my blog for free, or pay $25/page for your AI to read it for you." This is praxis.

Enshittify the enshittification machine.

We should also throw ads in there, via a deliberate prompt injection. I would use that to make their AI bot spew paragraphs of the grossest kink content known to fandom.

It is as if the "old magic" has got lost in a sea of "cloud" and "node" and "react" and the like.

Putting files of text on a webserver, and hosting it, is so old fashioned, so ancient, that it is almost inconceivable.

I must be getting old or something.

I am preferring light themes these days frog_please

Caves! Everyone loves caves. Did you know there is a huge network of caves under the Nullarbor? There is now but for how long? https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/picture/2025/jun/30/did-you-know-that-there-are-huge-caves-full-of-weirdy-bugs-and-ancient-life-right-under-the-nullarbor-desert

@rl_dane @hacknorris to me they are 2 different things. Discord is for young annoying people, and IRC is for old annoying people 😁

The thing that most shits me about discord is that they managed to kill forums because people stopped checking them. Humans are lazy.

Hmm might spin up Murmur again (Mumble server) for a few friends.

Sigh. I do miss forums

*Friends talking about subscribing to YouTube channels, online news, content creators, etc.*

Me: Oh, I typically don't subscribe in the traditional way. I use "RSS feeds" to keep me updated with online content.

Friend: What's RSS feeds?

Me: Take a set, my child. Now here is a story all about how, my life got flipped-turned upside down...

I wonder if some people will return to analog only for their publishing of books and photography/art and so on; it sucks for discoverability but does mean the plagiarism platforms won’t be able to immediately hoover up your life’s work.

@vwdasher omg I had a Marina when I was young! Slammed on the bump-stops with a flipped leaf spring and wound down torsion bars hahaha 😆 it was super tidy too in crisp white with brown vinyl interior. Did not miss the constant blown head baskets and cracked head. Ended up changing the 1800 for a 1750 OHC with twin SU from a donor car.

On the way to the hardware store yesterday, I was passed by this vintage truck driven by three young folk. I caught up at a traffic light, asked to take a photo, and had time for one question before the light changed for them. The vehicle is a 1968 vintage.

@sam yeah I’m kinda glad for youtube journalists calling stuff out instead of taking the money.

Went for a hoon in this thing. It is so stupidly fast, and yet can quietly tootle around town. The owner foolishly let me drive. In race mode. In the wet. neofox_floof_owo

@QuadRadical yeah the experience can vary wildly depending on server setup and client used. And if you dont have a reason to use it then it’s just an unnecessary thing that exists lol.

I found some neat group chats though, which keeps me using it as well as for family messaging/chat.

Edit: probably didnt need that much detail considering you said its not for you 😆

@flan orly? That part isn’t what is annoying me, it is working fine. It is the muc avatars that are missing and muc carbons/history sometimes not loading. The same clients with prosody work fine. I love the the tech under ejabberd but I can spare a few more mb ram to run prosody for the few users I have neocat_3c

@QuadRadical I will next week be back on prosody. Currently running ejabberd but going to migrate the couple of other users back to prosody and stay on that. You are more than welcome if you still haven’t joined one by next week
