"Going thirty-eight Dan, chill the fuck out, mow your damn lawn and sit the hell down"

---

Back after giving myself a month away from Fedi.

I'll attempt to curate my experience much more, starting with this account and instance.
I want comfy things in my life - I don't need to be adding stress and angst from my online interactions. We can do better. We should do better. Including myself.

My interests cover #tech, #photography, #biking, #motorsport, #fountainpen, and other things I will no doubt need to add here when I remember.
I touch computers in my spare time and self host things. Oh yeah so #selfhosting I guess.
In my other spare time I renovate my house and do #DIY stuff.

Oh and I (used to?) play music. #Guitar I still have and sometimes play, #Saxophone I used to have a couple of decades ago, I had 6 months of Drum lessons, and played Bass for our school band in Rockquest in the late 90's.
I have never done anything that cool since.

Oh I live in New Zealand, Aotearoa.

Why I love experimenting with this? My sewing machine has no network connection. Whatever I stitch is none of anyone’s business. I buy yarn, I design my motives with Inkscape, convert them to embroidery files with the Inkstitch plugin, copy the resulting DST files on a USB stick and „print“ my stuff on t-shirts, polos etc. A special version of ;)

@gsuberland but the important thing is we can blame someone else, right?

The AWS region us-east-1 seems to be having a bit of a moment and the front page of https://downdetector.co.uk/ right now is a really good guide to who uses Amazon for their services.

Interesting how some say the #aws outage is affecting a large chunk of Mastodon. Well, some of us don't use that single big instance, so no issues here. #us-east-1 #hostyourown #petsnotcattle

Edited yesterday

OK. is down. And it seems to be an issue with Amazon Web Services. Not the end of the world, but a reminder that a centralized cloud is a single point of failure.

AWS widespread outage. Most of the services I use at $day_job are down. Hooray for hosting silos! The Internet is supposed to be decentralized!

Nah, my cloud (which is a 20 y.o. Mac Mini sitting on top of a bookcase) is fine.
It's just a pun on Signal being a secure messenger, but relying on third-party infrastructure.
Nothing wrong with relying on others' infrastructure per-se, I'm not one of those full-on paranoid types — but the founders of Signal probably are. I mean, now that they have added a third "post-quantum" ratchet, the data is resistant to being brute forced by quantum computers: https://it.slashdot.org/story/25/10/19/0546205/why-signals-post-quantum-makeover-is-an-amazing-engineering-achievement
But this improvement itself assumes that earlier data IS vulnerable to store now, decrypt later attacks — from this POV using AWS is an awful practice, so relying on others' infra is bad according to them, not me 🙃

Started working on a zine to go with the roaming library. My idea is I can stash the device at my coffee shop, then leave some copies of the zine that will include QR codes to join the “secret WiFi” and get to the website where the goodies can be found.

... I am remembering a world where "640kb of memory is all you'll ever need"!

Part of the charm of "yayme.txt" is the idea of editing a plain text file under DOS or Linux, and keeping it on the desktop. It's so simple. It's so low tech. It's just a pile of thoughts tapped on a clunky keyboard.

Joy.
