Can you imagine if Mozilla had been secretly working on a new thing.
Firefox Search:
+ no AI summaries
+ no trying to keep you on the site
+ just links to quality information
+ funded by ads that are directly related to the search terms and results (with zero tracking)
Oh sorry. I allowed myself to dream for a second there. 😂
This week's business blog post explains why I make most of my resources (writing, open source software etc.) available for free. There are lots of reasons, but it boils down to low value payments across countries being a faff and I'm more likely to generate income from referrals / marketing (more people use my resources if they're free).
Of course, there is the risk that free resources aren't considered to have a value...

Another charming local.
There was a plain white home made ad taped to a telephone pole that said something like:
Need a website? $500
We're not mates, pay up or piss off.
I can't imagine who is the target market for a $500 website in 2025 is, but I'm keen to dig in to the unique selling point of "also, I fucking despise you"
Linode - 1 CPU Core, 2GB RAM, 50GB Storage. 3 backups. $28.38 NZD/month Pro: quick, because geographically close. Con: not as cheap as me.
Deluxhost - 2 Cores, 4GB RAM, 50GB storage. 1 backup. $8.28 NZD/month Pro: cheap! Con: Geographically far from me. May be a Pro though as well, but ssh lag is still a thing. Reliability unknown as yet.
In completely unrelated news… I really hate migrating stuff. But am, because I am cheap.
TIL, BASIC stands for "Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code"
In case you have not done so yet, surf the Wave of the fossify organization, check which of these applications are good for you, since they have no ads, they are free and open source and they are Good at One thing, just like a proper Unix program
No, I do not want to install your app.

Finally solved the #Degoogling debate. Anyone who finds fault with this list = Skill issue.
"Amazon argued, that the class was too large to be manageable"
This is my favorite defense to a class action suit.
"We cheated so many people, we can't possibly be expected to make it up to everyone"
We updated our #akkoma integration page with an easy way to link your account to a Prosody #xmpp server: https://joinjabber.org/tutorials/integration/akkoma/
Thanks to @nigel for testing it.
@akkoma maybe something to add to the official docu as well?
I was going to move quiescent.cafe (this #fedi instance) and #xmpp and my blog/websites over to another VPS tonight…. Linode is just getting too expensive. Going to give deluxhost.net a stab.
I didnt get very far, ended up testing an http_auth module for @kris, for Prosody against this Akkoma account, which is pretty cool.
I’m blaming this, but really it was a small part of my evening. I welcome all types of distractions and procrastination into my life
While I worry about my dainty new Mastodon server being able to handle it... you can gently boost this goat to federate me.
Baaaa!
This 1955 Ford Prefect was covered in 2 cent coins, including a scooter on the back also covered in coins. I live for this level of eccentricity.
Posting public this time.
When I've been applying for jobs I've done these things and it's proven extremely handy:
- save the job listing out as a pdf because they'll take it down later and you'll want to reference it
- save the exact copy of your CV/resumé and cover letter you sent them
- save out any responses you typed into free text fields.
It's especially useful when you apply for a job and hear back a month later, long after you've forgotten what it's even about.
I also have a spreadsheet listing the jobs I've applied for and when, and the closing dates just to keep track.
"Wow, the year 2025. Computers and the internet must be mindblowingly fast now!"
"Plain text has a loading screen."
Substack is implementing their writer lock-in right now.
Writers, leave while you can.
