Back after giving myself a month away from Fedi.
I'll attempt to curate my experience much more, starting with this account and instance.
I want comfy things in my life - I don't need to be adding stress and angst from my online interactions. We can do better. We should do better. Including myself.
My interests cover #tech, #photography, #biking, #motorsport, #fountainpen, and other things I will no doubt need to add here when I remember.
I touch computers in my spare time and self host things. Oh yeah so #selfhosting I guess.
In my other spare time I renovate my house and do #DIY stuff.
Oh and I (used to?) play music. #Guitar I still have and sometimes play, #Saxophone I used to have a couple of decades ago, I had 6 months of Drum lessons, and played Bass for our school band in Rockquest in the late 90's.
I have never done anything that cool since.
Oh I live in New Zealand, Aotearoa.

Went for a hoon in this thing. It is so stupidly fast, and yet can quietly tootle around town. The owner foolishly let me drive. In race mode. In the wet.

nigelPlaying with darktable again so I don’t have to dual-boot. It is not terrible, but has some niggles still; namely slow loading between images, and highlight reconstruction for blown-out areas sucks. It may be that my camera isn’t profiled correctly and so the default black and white-points are incorrect, but it is a frustration to work through and rectify. I did use darktable from 2019 to 2022, so know my way around it.

nigelSorted out the lights on my brothers #Toyota #Hilux today, being the good auto-electrician brother that I am. He fitted up a new bull bar with ingrated winch this week. Winch is not functional yet, he’s going to add an isolator switch in-line. No rush though, doesn’t need it yet. Lights however keep it street legal.
I think in September he’s heading down the South Island (of New Zealand), so as long as it’s done by then it’ll be sweet.

About
Having been on Fedi for some time (since 2017) and jumping across various platforms and taking some time off on occasion, I am back with an Akkoma instance. Quiescent Cafe is my comfy space; quiet and chill, a place to talk about interests and the good things in life.
Automatically included with the Akkoma sign-up is an XMPP account with Matrix gateway. See the Server Info below for more details.
Registering
Your account will need to be approved by an admin, so read the other guidelines and rules to ensure this is a suitable space before signing up.
Donations
To ensure this continues to exist, donations can be made to help cover the hosting and associated expenses like domain renewal and backups.
Either of the one off or recurring donation options are appreciated. It says swansinflight as it uses the same account as my photography.
Moderators and Bus-Factor
At the moment this is just me. If it grows beyond more than several users, Moderators will chosen from the member base. If I get hit by a bus or otherwise disappear, this will keep running for approximately a month until hosting isn't paid, realistically more than a month as I keep the account in credit. My wife will have all the details to log in and inform local users of their options, whether that is taking over the server or migrating to another instance.

- Treat others as you would have them treat you.
If I have to elaborate more than this, or boundaries are attempted to be pushed, then this is not the place for you. Anyone signing up here should be an adult, and capable of making adult decisions. If I have to make a decision, then my decision is final. This server is not a democracy.
Server Info
Akkoma
This Akkoma instance is hosted on Linode in Australia. At the moment it is on a small VPS, but based on donation viability I am more than happy to scale it up as required.
XMPP
A Prosody instance is running on the same server.
Previously it authenticated against Akkoma, and I would like to get that working again since changing back from ejabberd to Prosody. But in the mean time simply request and I will create an xmpp account for you. There is no web client associated, you will need to install an app. I recommend Gajim for Linux and Windows, and Monocles Chat or Conversations on Android. iOS seems a bit hit and miss, but have heard Monal is okay. There a plenty of other options, but I have found these the most solid.
