"Going thirty-eight Dan, chill the fuck out, mow your damn lawn and sit the hell down"

---

Back after giving myself a month away from Fedi.

I'll attempt to curate my experience much more, starting with this account and instance.
I want comfy things in my life - I don't need to be adding stress and angst from my online interactions. We can do better. We should do better. Including myself.

My interests cover #tech, #photography, #biking, #motorsport, #fountainpen, and other things I will no doubt need to add here when I remember.
I touch computers in my spare time and self host things. Oh yeah so #selfhosting I guess.
In my other spare time I renovate my house and do #DIY stuff.

Oh and I (used to?) play music. #Guitar I still have and sometimes play, #Saxophone I used to have a couple of decades ago, I had 6 months of Drum lessons, and played Bass for our school band in Rockquest in the late 90's.
I have never done anything that cool since.

Oh I live in New Zealand, Aotearoa.

Lawmakers Want to Ban VPNs—And They Have No Idea What They're Doing https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2025/11/lawmakers-want-ban-vpns-and-they-have-no-idea-what-theyre-doing

I'm gonna be honest here: banning VPNs is not the solution. People who want to find content like porn will get it one way or another. It is going to harm legitimate users who use VPNs for security reasons, like on public WiFi or for getting inside a corporate network. I can't log into any of our servers/cloud w/o a VPN. All remote employees use a VPN. We replicate data between 2 data centers using a VPN

I'm really hoping for Fediverse help here.

I have a 14 year old niece. She's incredibly smart and extremely motivated when it comes to engineering things.

I want to get her some electronics stuff, like an Arduino kit, but maybe something with wearables, etc. to make it more relevant to her than just a breadboard.

She'll also need some books on electronics, since she doesn't have the background in that.

Sadly, some limitations:

- I can't help her. Her mother won't let my wife or I talk to her. This gift itself will have to be given through a third party.

- She has a learning disability around reading- likely dyslexia, and so we need material that's easy to read

- Her English is not amazing, especially because of the learning disability.

So I'm looking for a kit with a ton of instructional material. Programming, electronics, breadboard, the whole kit and kaboodle.

If you have ideas, please share, and boost!

now that it's almost 2026, let's rename "lead-free solder" to "normal solder" because cmon it handles just fine and we should really try to put lead in fewer things

No one writes documentation. No one reads documentation. Everyone complains about lack of documentation. The equilibrium is mutual suffering. But sure, your startup is going to solve documentation.

This is the most punk thing I've ever heard of. This guy got his physics phd then proceeded to use it to create open source plans for everything you need to start a civilization.

Definitely going in my digital apocalypse kit (wait, you don't have one?!), and this guy is now one of my heroes.

Well, @virtuosew is at it again:

Quoting:

"The point of isn't to produce a finished piece. It's to capture a memory, a feeling, a fragment.

"Don't ask, "Is it good?". Instead, ask "Did I enjoy doing it? Did I manage to be there, in one place, paying attention? Does it remind me of something? “

"Good comes with practice, practice is pleasanter if you stop trying to be good!"
