Love to have quote toots on this site. So cool. Lots of value added!
@MLE_online I love that they took so long to get it out and it is unusable. Relying on the original author to approve every quote post? Lol right.
@nigel I would be so annoyed if i was having to approve quote toots of my toots.
@MLE_online
I came over from Twitter in earnest in Oct or Nov of 2022 & there was immediately a huge controversy over the fact that people were quote-posting. Folks were getting banned for it on some servers, widely blocked, because to most Masto old timers who had an opinion on the matter, quote posting was primarily a form of abuse: one would quote-post to belittle, or to leverage the original for clout.
Black Twitter norms around quote-tweeting OTOH used it for boosting & affirmation. ...
@FeralRobots I don't remember anyone quote posting back then. I remember everyone fighting about whether Mastodon should implement quote posting, and I seem to recall heaps of abuse being directed at Taylor Lorenz for advocating in favor of it.
How were people quote posting back then when they're only barely rolling it out right now?
@MLE_online
Short answer is "manually." I've been quote-posting regularly since I started here by just pasting the URL into the post; the client treats it like a shared post.
AFAICS people didn't do it because it was against the norms, & I saw & even personally encountered old-timers blocking for the offense of doing it.
Anyway that's the history behind things like an original poster wanting to approve a quote-post. (Which has gotta be configurable, Eugen loves the idea of quote-posts.)
@MLE_online
The cultural norm before the 2022 diaspora seemed to me to be that some people believed INTENSELY that they had moral authority to control anything anybody did with anything they wrote on Fedi, regardless of how they set 'visibility'. Nevermind that the platform never supported that.
@FeralRobots @MLE_online
But posting a link witha comment above is just posting a link witha comment above. It provides no context,you can't see what the comment relates to without opening the link.
Its just not the same thing at all
@botvolution
@MLE_online
I can believe that's true now - I haven't tested it - but as of Fall 2022, a post shared by pasting the link into a new post would render at least the first part of the quoted post's text, on Mastodon. On other clients, it would often render the whole post.
@FeralRobots @MLE_online
Not on any clients I've used
@botvolution @FeralRobots Same. I have neither the ability to post a link to a toot and have it render it as a quote toot or hit a quote toot button.
@botvolution @MLE_online
Just tested, & the behavior in core Mastodon seems to be the same whether you're using the quote-post UI feature or just pasting the URL into the message. Example:

So, first, let's make sure we mean the same thing by client: In this context, I've been meaning 'mastodon' vs 'friendica' etc. So if you're not seeing it through the web interface on your instances, maybe it's a server config thing.
If what you mean is mobile client, then yes, I see what you're describing in Tusky. The official Mastodon Android app renders pasted links just like quote posts, though. (I used Megalodon until a few days ago, it would look same as Tusky.)
@FeralRobots @botvolution I use Mastodon in the browser and through the moshidon app. Neither one works like this for me
