"Going thirty-eight Dan, chill the fuck out, mow your damn lawn and sit the hell down"

---

Back after giving myself a month away from Fedi.

I'll attempt to curate my experience much more, starting with this account and instance.
I want comfy things in my life - I don't need to be adding stress and angst from my online interactions. We can do better. We should do better. Including myself.

My interests cover #tech, #photography, #biking, #motorsport, #fountainpen, and other things I will no doubt need to add here when I remember.
I touch computers in my spare time and self host things. Oh yeah so #selfhosting I guess.
In my other spare time I renovate my house and do #DIY stuff.

Oh and I (used to?) play music. #Guitar I still have and sometimes play, #Saxophone I used to have a couple of decades ago, I had 6 months of Drum lessons, and played Bass for our school band in Rockquest in the late 90's.
I have never done anything that cool since.

Oh I live in New Zealand, Aotearoa.

Proposal: I create a strict subset of PostgresQL SQL which covers only those features also supported by MySQL, MariaDB and SQLite, and name it "PregreSQL". I then create a Rust library for using this sql language, which I name PregRS

20 years ago, normal people avoided technology and techies would jump on the newest gadgets as soon as they could

now, normal people buy smart toasters & coffee mugs while every techie I know is on the verge of retreating to the forest

Today I fixed a television out of spite.

One of the most common faults with modern TVs is a backlight failing. These are cheap to replace, and the tools to test them are cheap to obtain.

But the effort to get to the backlights? Oh my!

A TV that was made to be repaired would have a separate pane for backlights you could slide out, or some other access mechanism.

But today's consumer TVs require you to disassemble practically everything to get to the backlights. That means getting to them is a huge investment in time (for self-repair) or money (if you go to a repair shop and pay for labour). TV companies know that most people will just buy a whole new TV.

So today I fixed the TV out of spite. Not because it was rewarding, or for environmental or financial concerns (although all of these are valid). I fixed it because the company that made it did not want it to be easily fixed.

Learn to love your darkness, By MpieraM design

clippy I love the concept that the darkness is here a comfortable companion and not a foe. Instead of being scary or empty, the night sky is portrayed as something beautiful and personal, literally flowing from her as an extension of herself.
I also really like the art style. The crisp, black and white line work of the everyday bedroom creates a wonderful contrast with the deep, cosmic texture of the galaxy.

More questions than answers in this episode. We're taking a look at the struggles a photographer can face after 25 years of a freelance career, and trying to find a sense of belonging when you are a temporary feature instead of a permanent fixture.
