"Going thirty-eight Dan, chill the fuck out, mow your damn lawn and sit the hell down"

---

Back after giving myself a month away from Fedi.

I'll attempt to curate my experience much more, starting with this account and instance.
I want comfy things in my life - I don't need to be adding stress and angst from my online interactions. We can do better. We should do better. Including myself.

My interests cover #tech, #photography, #biking, #motorsport, #fountainpen, and other things I will no doubt need to add here when I remember.
I touch computers in my spare time and self host things. Oh yeah so #selfhosting I guess.
In my other spare time I renovate my house and do #DIY stuff.

Oh and I (used to?) play music. #Guitar I still have and sometimes play, #Saxophone I used to have a couple of decades ago, I had 6 months of Drum lessons, and played Bass for our school band in Rockquest in the late 90's.
I have never done anything that cool since.

Oh I live in New Zealand, Aotearoa.

If I know a company that's violating an open source license (GPL, for example, or even BSD, where you just have to mention the library), who/where should I report to?

My TV set is from two years ago, it's a 2022 model. It is a Smart TV, but none of these functions work: no voice control, no apps — as I've never agreed to the terms. Even in this capacity it's pretty useful — I've made a tiny web remote for it in Python, so I can control it with any device on my home network that has the most basic web browser, I use my old Lumia phone and I almost never touch the remote it came with. It can play movies from a miniDLNA server on my Bittorrent seedbox, so I can download movies illegally and immediately watch them without transferring the files anywhere, drop in subtitles: just name the file same as video file and place it in the same directory — perfect!
My friends can use it as a Bluetooth speaker when they come over, and they can use Miracast if they want to watch something that requires an app — so I don't have to have any of this shit installed on my TV.
Its cold boot time is about a second, maybe another one to connect to the wireless network — it's even faster if you've turned it off less than an hour ago, it would take more time for a VHS player to ingest the cassette and spin the motor up.
Sure — there are a lot of bad things about "innovation", my computers are at least a decade old, but somehow TV is the thing I'm worried about the least 😅

Alcohol-based aftershave lotions… that might be a problem for some, but in my case they always case skin irritation, which made me hate them. I have a couple of expensive perfumed ones from over a decade ago. I've adopted a habit of shaving in the shower — my skin feels okay even without any lotion this way, problem solved 🤷

Thinking about just adding robots.txt rules to block Google from crawling my sites. The devil's bargain before was that your words get devoured by their "AI" but in exchange your website is still findable through the regular web search part. But if they're going to force AI this hard over regular search, then why bother? What is the advantage to me in Google crawling my site?

Things platforms want you to do less of:

  • untrackably copy a link to something
  • save an image
  • copy arbitrary text
  • decide what to look at next
  • return to where you were a minute ago
  • find options you can change
  • know how many search results there are / length of scroll
  • decide what part of a video you want to see
  • prioritize and deprioritize content based on your own preferences
  • manage your own attention

Mobile apps make this agenda easier. Apps are for companies.

The web makes this agenda harder. The web is for people.

A couple of Grand Entrance shots from Friday's Rocky Boy's Agency Powwow in Montana. This powwow is gigantic compared to the ones I'm accustom to in Nevada! Saturday is the big competition day!
