"Going thirty-eight Dan, chill the fuck out, mow your damn lawn and sit the hell down"

---

Back after giving myself a month away from Fedi.

I'll attempt to curate my experience much more, starting with this account and instance.
I want comfy things in my life - I don't need to be adding stress and angst from my online interactions. We can do better. We should do better. Including myself.

My interests cover #tech, #photography, #biking, #motorsport, #fountainpen, and other things I will no doubt need to add here when I remember.
I touch computers in my spare time and self host things. Oh yeah so #selfhosting I guess.
In my other spare time I renovate my house and do #DIY stuff.

Oh and I (used to?) play music. #Guitar I still have and sometimes play, #Saxophone I used to have a couple of decades ago, I had 6 months of Drum lessons, and played Bass for our school band in Rockquest in the late 90's.
I have never done anything that cool since.

Oh I live in New Zealand, Aotearoa.

Too real.

Windows 11 out of the box experience is terrible and getting worse.

My camera shoots fascists

What if "the cloud" — other people's computers — were our computers collectively, as a public utility of sorts. And why self hosting millions of personal "clouds" is not the answer.

"But through the process, I realized how privileged I am to have the skills required for digital sovereignty. I realized how unattainable, unsustainable, and unrealistic self-hosting is as a mass solution to the problems we face. I realized that self-reliance isn't freedom — it's the luxury of retreating from a system that others can't escape."

"Imagine a world where your library card includes 100GB of encrypted file storage, photo-sharing and document collaboration tools, and media streaming services — all for free. Your data is encrypted end-to-end, but is shareable to anyone on any other service through standardized protocols."

"Specialization is attractive. Many famous people you know are specialists. [...] Specialization feels like a more predictable and measurable path."

"The world needs more hybrid people because the world is getting more complex. Specialists are important because they help us push the limits in each field. But we also need people who can see the big picture, find unexpected connections, and guide the world’s efforts."

“So under 'hobbies' you have listed ‘programming'?”

“Yes!”

“But I also see it listed here under 'things you despise with all your being'”

“Yes that’s correct”

i think youtube should take their role as part of the yt-dlp supply chain more seriously and not introduce breaking changes that force patching of yt-dlp

I’m so thin! I measured myself around my little toe!”

Yes it is an “engineering marvel” but its also bullshit marketing - at least every single article talking about it is.

I'm sure other people have noted this but at some point we went from talking about "social network sites" to talking about "social media sites".

At first, the network was the thing that mattered. Then, the media was the thing that mattered.

A quick Google Trends query shows the shift might have happened around 2012:

Fedi people!
I am looking for resources of MS-DOS programs.
Something I can put on a diskete (or two or three) to use it with an 1996 486 CPU (I think 25 MHz), with 16MB of RAM, MS-DOS 6.22 & Windows 3.1

Game, office, other programms

Everything goes. I should just be able to get it onto a Diskette, because the target machine only have this interface available.

Please boost ♻

I don’t think there will be an album this year. I usually make the music around this time every year
but I have a middle ear infection and it’s making my ears ring so much I can’t sleep
so I haven’t been able to wear headphones to create music.
Anyway, here’s one of the heavier songs I’ve been working on.

This season again and again I'm trying to capture the magical dance of the fireflies. I internally debated between the zoomed in photo fully filled with fireflies OR a vertical with the visual flow, some water streaks and shape of the rocks leading me in. As you can see, I have chosen the latter. For good or otherwise.
