"Going thirty-eight Dan, chill the fuck out, mow your damn lawn and sit the hell down"

---

Back after giving myself a month away from Fedi.

I'll attempt to curate my experience much more, starting with this account and instance.
I want comfy things in my life - I don't need to be adding stress and angst from my online interactions. We can do better. We should do better. Including myself.

My interests cover #tech, #photography, #biking, #motorsport, #fountainpen, and other things I will no doubt need to add here when I remember.
I touch computers in my spare time and self host things. Oh yeah so #selfhosting I guess.
In my other spare time I renovate my house and do #DIY stuff.

Oh and I (used to?) play music. #Guitar I still have and sometimes play, #Saxophone I used to have a couple of decades ago, I had 6 months of Drum lessons, and played Bass for our school band in Rockquest in the late 90's.
I have never done anything that cool since.

Oh I live in New Zealand, Aotearoa.

I've been using OpenStreetMap regularly since going deGoogled Android several years back, and it's gotten pretty damn good this last year or so. Used to be that even with an address, it wouldn't be able to find where you wanted to go reliably. I made an account just to add places I needed to go when they were missing.

The two trips I've taken this month, this has only happened once.

POIs still aren't as good as the corpo players, but it's easy to search the address and plop it in.

It's worth a try if you haven't taken it for a spin lately!

Today I used a rotary tool for the first time. I cut ø5cm blank plastic christmas orbs into the shape I need for the eyes.

Honestly a bit scary. I'm surprised you don't have to keep pressing a button for it to run. I case you drop it it would then stop. No, you just switch it on and it keeps running. 😳

I suspect that I will never find out about every batshit 19th century transport , because there are always more. Like this, for example, which is powered by five tonnes of caustic soda surrounded by water. Link to English-language Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soda_locomotive

When an person says „I forgot“ what we often mean is:

* I remembered 5 times but at the wrong time
* I fully planned to do it but I felt overwhelmed
* I shamed myself for not doing it that I did not do it

Edit: I wrote a neghty post about this and other ADHD symptoms and what causes them

I know that I need to get my life together. But I'm kinda waiting to see how quickly the world comes to an end before I consider putting in the effort.

A website getting hacked and losing 13,000 “verification photos and images of government IDs” in the same week the age verification nonsense comes into force for the is fitting. Because that’s what we will see a whole lot more of… to protect the children.

Once more for those in the back:

The fact that LLMs can "solve" most common interview questions is damning of our interview processes, but not a sign that it can take our jobs.

it is deeply funny to think google once claimed to be "organizing the world's information" when paired with the clockwork shutdowns and sunsets that happen every 18 months

the url shorterner being the current one on the chopping board is almost beyond satire

We all suspected it, now it’s confirmed.

A previously unreported order by to cut satellite over a portion of Ukraine disrupted a counteroffensive by Kyiv in the autumn of 2022. Reuters investigated the billionaire's order & its implications for countries increasingly reliant on his Starlink internet service.

My Android phone just performed a forced, unauthorized OS update, removing root access in the process.

Despite automatic updates being explicitly disabled.

The tech industry's understanding of "consent" is contemptuous.

"No" means "no", not "maybe later", or "unless you think you know better".

Refinishing this old table that was on the side of the road, just for the heck of it. 1/x

A gentle plea to young dipshits

An older musician has died, and while their music may seem totally irrelevant to your life, and although you may attach no particular significance to it, this person and their music were hugely important to multiple generations of people

You and *your* absolute favorite musician, the one you always reached for during your best and worst times, are going to grow older together, and even if you never meet them they'll feel like one of your oldest friends, and when they die you may be surprised by how hard it hits you

so if you're workshopping a good snarky toot dunking on the recently deceased or their fans right now, please reconsider

I currently have an HDMI output dongle and an HDMI input dongle connected together and both plugged into the same computer.

"Why", you ask? The UK's new "Online Safety" law, and those were the most appropriate components in my junk drawer.

Using a VPN would be convenient. This is about principle.

I'm certain these new age verification systems are just piping selfie videos into some opaque "AI" classifier.

It seems only fair to respond with a bit of generative art. I'm going to enjoy the irony of defeating one black box with another.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
