"Going thirty-eight Dan, chill the fuck out, mow your damn lawn and sit the hell down"

---

Back after giving myself a month away from Fedi.

I'll attempt to curate my experience much more, starting with this account and instance.
I want comfy things in my life - I don't need to be adding stress and angst from my online interactions. We can do better. We should do better. Including myself.

My interests cover #tech, #photography, #biking, #motorsport, #fountainpen, and other things I will no doubt need to add here when I remember.
I touch computers in my spare time and self host things. Oh yeah so #selfhosting I guess.
In my other spare time I renovate my house and do #DIY stuff.

Oh and I (used to?) play music. #Guitar I still have and sometimes play, #Saxophone I used to have a couple of decades ago, I had 6 months of Drum lessons, and played Bass for our school band in Rockquest in the late 90's.
I have never done anything that cool since.

Oh I live in New Zealand, Aotearoa.

Don't go to the on my website:
https://nicolas-hoizey.photo/map/

Don't click the “play” button at the bottom of the controls in the top right corner.

You've been warned!

You risk being mesmerized for hours, have a nice week-end... 😅

Even more if you also click the “fullscreen” button
 đŸ€Ș

Disclaimer: it loads a loooooot of map tiles, you need a pretty good connection for it to run smoothly, and no fear of data plan consumption.

No, we don't. We need to talk about your trackers.

I'm very happy to announce that Practical ZFS is now hosting the "official unofficial" (or is it unofficial official?) support forum for zVault, the community-operated, still-FreeBSD-based fork of the now-discontinued TrueNAS Core!

We're lucky to have a bunch of talent on the Fediverse to share their Darktable skills :)

I'm much more of a morning person than evening, so heading to Treasure Island in the #SanFrancisco Bay last night was a major feat. Very much prefer to be out before people are up, on the road and in the scene.

But my instinct was right. A late afternoon low haze we've had for the last few days while the sun was setting and a telephoto made for some nice photos.

All three were taken about the same time looking WNW past Alcatraz to Marin County during the golden hour. I did not change or subdue the color, but did use a filter.

# Draft (and I can't emphasise that enough) sample / template terms for fediverse instances

I have put my money where my mouth is, and started to prepare some sample/template terms for fediverse instances.

This is a work in progress, and constructive feedback etc. is welcome.

Instead of using butter with your garlic bread, you should switch to Linux. You can set up a virtual machine to try out various distros to see which one works best for your needs.

Since switching from Windows to Linux and from Lightroom to darktable, my setup is no longer properly color-managed. It used to be - back on Windows everything was reasonably calibrated. But in the end, maybe it doesn’t really matter. Or more precisely: maybe it never did. Or rather: it’s hopeless.

Lighting conditions vary. Most of your screens likely aren’t color-managed or adapted to your current environment. And then there’s everything else - biology, psychology, mood. Truth is, we’ll never all see exactly the same image.

But perhaps that’s not a flaw - it’s the point. A space for different ways of seeing. Just as a sculptor starts with raw stone, I start with a RAW file: a block of digital potential. The image I shape from it isn’t the final word - just the beginning of someone else’s interpretation.

Busy period at work at the moment. As I remind my teams, nothing is life or death, just do what you can.
