I had a realisation. All this self-hosting and pain and learning I put myself through:

It is the equivalent of someone who works in IT doing a bunch of stuff to their car themself, modifying things so they are just so, and doing their own maintenance.

I look at those people and go WHY! THERE ARE FAR BETTER USES OF YOUR TIME!

So yeah, presumably IT folks look at people like me battling after-hours with self-hosting thingsโ€ฆ basically like that. neofox_thinking

@falkheiland I know, the comparison just amused me immensely - and Iโ€™d never discourage folks from doing their own car stuff just because Iโ€™m disillusioned with it from work neofox_laugh_sweat

@nigel i also think its important for people outside of any industry to have that cross-over? knowledge. otherwise all there will be is only google, ms, amazon etc.
in case of cars that approach might be a lost cause already, except you have access to pre computerized vehicles i guess.

@nigel Ah, that's why I'm from IT and still playing with selfhosting in my free time โ€” I just don't have a car and a garage (but I'm planning)! drgn_3c_evil

@evgandr @nigel

Imagine if people who worked on their old hot rods and beat-up Mustangs in their garage were looked on as weirdos and counter-cultural like people who do their own actual computing are.

"Man, who's THAT guy covered in grease?"
"Oh he's weird bob, he works on his own cars!"
"Oh man, he must be a terrorist or something. What is wrong with those people? Why can't you just buy a new Ford every five years like everyone else? FREAK!"

@falkheiland very true, and also true about modern cars; I hate them.
