Mark Wyner Won’t Comply vm

Edited 22 days ago

This is bound to bring some joy to your day. Everything about it is delightful.

(And the engineering is amazing.)

@markwyner Hmm, I wonder what kind of gearing that requires on an exercise bike to pull a human up something like that. 😂

@ai6yr seriously. I zoomed in to look. It appears that the bike is only turning the axle. Then the rest of the work is done by pulley physics.

@nigel serious.

Thanks a tonne for sharing. I needed the joy today.

@markwyner GLORIOUS.

Also, I need this in my back yard. ***NEED***.

@markwyner I love it! Any chance you could add some alt text?

@LoganFive I always do. And I did. It’s there. Are you not seeing it?

@markwyner Terribly sorry. I was looking for the alt text icon but it is showing up when I hover. 👍

@LoganFive rockstar. And no worries at all. You’re good. I was just concerned that it wasn’t showing for you. That would have made me sad.

@proedie no idea. I don’t even remember where I found the video.

@markwyner the most important information is missing: Where is this?

@dummzeuch @markwyner there are at least two of them at "Karls Erdbeerhof" near Berlin, but my daughter's legs were too short to move her brother

@Cryptomon

Oh, so it must be a kit or an installation. Nice.

@lettersinthesand I mean, that’s the best part. The machine is amazing. But it’s their pure delight and happiness that got me. This is what life could be for humans. Joy.

So…y’all really liked this. And that was the whole point. It brought me instant joy so I wanted to share it. Seeing y’all love on it as well fills me with happiness.

With all the bad stuff happening, we have to remind ourselves why we fight th me good fight. Laughter and smiles. Those are two really good reasons.

@lettersinthesand music is rad. It has literally saved my life.

@lettersinthesand everything except modern country and most pop/autotune stuff.

I grew up listening to hip-hop, metal, punk, and hardcore. Those are my faves. And I still listen to records in those genres that I’ve had in my collection for decades.

But I will listen to anything if it’s good. I genre hop frequently. You?

@markwyner Love this post. Know why? I've seen the same on Reddit before and there it got mostly hate and people making fun of the low tech involved. I had no reason to engage.

Here? Positive vibes all over the place. This is why I love the Fedi so much. Real people, not a gleeful karma farm.

@bekopharm wow, that’s interesting to hear. And also not surprising. The fediverse is rad.

@markwyner Imagine how fit you'd be if you had one of these in your garden and a couple of kids.

@markwyner @LoganFive

I have noticed that alt text is not visible on videos in the web UI at least for some instances.

Here are screenshots of this post in the official mastodon app and the web UI. Note that the alt button is visible in the app but there is no equivalent on the web version.

@gbargoud

Sounds like some sort of bug to me. I wrote it, and it’s there. Do you see alt text on other posts in those same browsers/apps?

I recommend reporting that bug as an issue on the Mastodon GitHub repos:

https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues

https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon-ios/issues

I would, but I can’t because I see the alt text in the web UI and in all seven of the Mastodon mobile apps on my mobile.

@markwyner @ai6yr there's no visible pulleys. The bike is connected to the axle, I think instead of the flywheel, using it's original chainring, with some unseen ratio, probably via a chain. Then there's another gear reduction from the axle to another short axle above it, which pulls a different chain around the ramp. The carriage engages with this last chain.

@bracken @markwyner Pretty cool! It would be neat to learn how to set those up (for no other reason than understanding building gearing/bicycle driven equipment).

@ai6yr

Oh, man. You said it. It brought me great joy just to watch this. But immediately after, my brain went to the engineering.

Someone posted this link to more info about it:

That's our future, if there will be one: sophisticated low tech no artificial energy fully recyclable pure fun tools.

@markwyner this is fun :) But I don’t think it’s DIY. We have one of those in a kids amusement park around Berlin. So everyone who wants one and can’t build, there is a chance for buying ;)

@stealthmusic yeah, I learned from some replies that it’s not DIY. But close. Same energy.

@markwyner would you mind terribly adding the joy scrolling hashtag to the original post? It makes it easier to find the post again when one needs an infusion of joy.

@herhandsmyhands oooh, that’s nice. I didn’t know that was a thing. Done. Thank you!

@gbargoud
This is true, there is no Alt button to clips on the web interface. BUT: with mouseover the alt-text appears. So this should not be a problem. 🙂

@catflyhigh

Oh, I see. Yeah, that’s it. The little “alt” button is not in every UI. And it’s not necessary. While the alt text is helpful for people who are visually-enabled, it’s there for people who have visual disabilities. The graphical button overlay and the hover aren’t critical.

This has some vault-tec fallout shelter -vibes what with that soundtrack, and with those azo colours and astroturf.

@carolleisa no idea. I looked up the social handle in the video overlay, but I couldn’t find it.

@markwyner @LoganFive

I've noticed that the link to read it is missing on videos on the website on my phone browser but haven't investigated much further.

According to someone else in the comments it does appear on the tooltip when hovering over it with your mouse if you're on a computer and I'm pretty sure it is reachable for a screen reader so it:s not a huge bug but would explain why it didn't show up for everyone.

1

@gbargoud

It’s absolutely available for screen readers.

Also, this is a video so there’s no alt tag. The default video accommodation is captions. But alt text can be added with something called an “aria-label.” A screen reader will read this the same way it reads alt text.

@markwyner 🙏🏾

Given the existence of doom scrolling, I thought a happier alternative would be a net good, and I'm glad to say other people have adopted it to great, joy-inducing effect.

@herhandsmyhands agreed. People use “BloomScrolling” as well. I’m gonna add “JoyScrolling” to my list.

@carolleisa I’ll take your word on that. I can’t visit Reddit.

@anne oh, yeah. When I was writing my alt text I was trying to figure out what was going on back there. That single patch of grass is a wonderland.

@markwyner this sound like the so pioppi stuff from Bruno Ferrin. He has a whole park in Italy.

@ai6yr @markwyner same as riding a bike up a hill with your own weight on it I suppose

@seb321

Close. But the gears and chains would change the physics.

Alright @Waitnwallflower
We need to learn how to build one of these. It'll definitely keep Joy alive.

I'll even let you go first.

And no, that wouldn't be me making sure it doesn't collapse on itself on the first human run. 😜

😲 this is like the one kid rides at the amusement park here and I loved that ride so much. I was so bummed when my son decided it was too much of a baby ride for him.
😁💜

@Waitnwallflower

Awe. That’s too bad. I think it would be super fun. The big ones scare me anyway. 😂

@WrenArcher

The burning question for me would be “who gets to ride first.”

@Waitnwallflower

@markwyner
Same. The big ones scare the buhjeezus outta me. At the old Astroworld amusement park there was one that was for younger kids but still had some fun drops and turns to it that just made it fun to ride on.

Then as we got older my friends wanted get on the rickety old wooden coaster. Thank gawd I didn't meet the height requirement for a year or two.

Don't.... say anything.

@WrenArcher

There’s one in Minneapolis that’s still in commission. It was built in 1976. It’s about as sus as you can imagine. It feels like it’s gonna fall apart on you.
